So far we have played 4 games in Herts Division 2 for the 2023/24 season. Surprisingly, with 2 wins and 2 draws, we remain undefeated. We have not been able to put out our strongest team all season, and have rode our luck a bit once or twice..

After a win on boards 2 and 3, defeat on board 4 and draw on board 5, it all came down to board 1 where white had a Rook and Bishop v Rook and 3 pawns. White was reliant on 10 second time increments and a draw was agreed giving us the match.

Somewhat fortunate on Board 3 as if White plays 20 f5 black is in a lot of trouble on the g file. Instead white went 20 Nf3 which handed black the initiative.
20 Nf3 Nh5 21 Qh4 Bf6 and the tables are turned in black’s favour in the diagram above. White tried 22. Ne5 but BxQ 23 NxQ BxR check 24 KxR and BxN (on e7) leaves black a rook up.
