Hertford won the toss and elected to have White on Board 1.

Anthony did not play the Benko-Half accepted very well, and had to settle
the half point offered. Leon drew, then Terry drew in what was a difficult
position if his opponent had been more enterprising. Malcolm had a
comfortable win, and Dan, on his debut was a bit fortunate his opponent
played a winning endgame far too passively, but to his credit took full
advantage. Played one, one one.

Three Horseshoes, Three Wins (and a Draw)

Another dry clear April evening. We undertook the 25 mile trek up the A1 to the delightful Three Horseshoes in Willian, Letchworth. A traditional country pub – perfect venue for last match of the league season (or indeed any match). No prospect of promotion or relegation, so no pressure other than pride.

I mused over the Three/Three heading above upon entering the pub, but the way the games were going after about an hour and a half, such a result was looking highly unlikely. On Board 2, Malcolm got a good game with the Benk0 Gambit Half Accepted  as White, and won quite comfortably. An Alapin Sicilian caused Black problems on Board 1, but a surprise pin won material to emerge successfully from a difficult position.  An oversight in a better position allowed a win for us on Board 3, giving us the match.

Deer, Rabbits, Venus, Crescent Moon and a Pint of Bitter

An Away match in Hertford on the first dry night since the hosepipe ban was imposed.  Big help having Adam Raoof (President: Middlesex County Chess Association) as our Guest Board 1 (maybe we should auction off this prestigious position on ebay in future). The Hertford Club in Bull Plain is a delightful establishment with appropriate beverages. The match was a 4-1 away win to Borehamwood which gives us 13 points from 11 games. One more match to go at  Letchworth next week (At The Three Horseshoes public house – more amber nectar)

Some photos  from last night available on   http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamraoof/sets/72157629895937961/  – not recommended if you have just had a heavy meal.

On the journey home traversing the unlit country road, a deer was sighted as well as the other delights in the title (except the beer).

Neighbourhood Bully takes the spoils

Having lost 0-5 at Watford in January, a modicum of  local pride was at stake. Watford turned up with their secret weapons, a 5 year-old on board 4, and an 8 year-old on board 5.   As it turned out, we had a good evening, with 3 wins and 2 draws, to finish off the home campaign on a positive note.

2 away matches to come, then the Town Council chess event in June (watch this space).

Enjoy Your Easter Eggs – Club Next Open for Home match 10 April 2012

Hi All,

Last home match of the season coming up. We lost 5-0 at Watford, a rare bagel for us. So, revenge is in the air.

Everyone welcome for club night, and a nice cup of tea or coffee.

Watch this space for further chess evenings, including hopefully a tournament during the local civic festival in June!

Drawing out a win

I drew a couple of games this week that I really should have won. In the first, I was a pawn down and facing likely defeat. I spotted a way of getting the pawn back, and was so elated after doing so that I missed winning a piece the next move.

The second game was against a stronger opponent. I was black defending mating threats in a fiery Chinese Dragon. With about ten minutes to go in a quickplay finish, I found myself chasing the opponent’s King into the middle of the board, and had to keep checking him or would be checkmated myself. I missed a pawn check that would have facilitated this and had to agree a draw with 2 minutes left.

Conclusions?

1)      If your circumstances in a poor position suddenly improve, don’t get over euphoric – they may be able to  improve even more

2)      If you have at least a draw by perpetual check after a tough game, and a few minutes to spare, keep calm and look at the wider picture to see if you have something better.

A win on the Road (just off the A1)

Getting a bit twitchy with team only winning 3 and drawing 1 out of 8  league matches, but we did the ‘double’ over Stevenage 3 to banish all fears of relegation. Board 1 saw white misplay a Grand Prix Attack, and try a double piece sacrifice to open Black up. It did not work. A nifty Queens Gambit Declined on board 2 led to a won endgame, with White’s a and b pawns trundling like a juggernaut towards the 8th rank. A couple of other good wins, and it is all smiles again.

Another defeat – Captain apologizes

Oh dear. Turn up at Welwyn after (yet again) getting confused by local roundabouts, a modern version Dante’s seven circles of Hell. Match going well. 2-2 after a good win by Terry. Your truly on board 1 made a pigs ear of some defensive origami, and was lucky to emerge three pawns for a piece broadly, if not deservedly, equal. Trying too hard because I outgrade opponent, and make a blooper in time scramble. As Kellee Patterson famously sang “If it don’t fit, don’t force it”. My new chess motto.
